It’s my second to last full day on trail. This adventure will be over soon and I’m not sure yet how I feel about that. All day I vacillated between impatience to get back to the creature comforts of home and family, and my desire to stay out in the elements I’ve become accustomed to – dirt, mountains, sun, wind, valleys, trees, stars.\u00a0 Will I be able to slide easily back into a society obsessed with material things?\u00a0 Will I feel like a weathered square peg trying to shove itself into a plastic round hole?\u00a0 I don’t know.<\/p>\n

The terrain shared my ambivalence today, alternating between blue lakes and snow-covered hills to meadows lined with dying plants to forested tunnels. It was unremarkable hiking compared to the high Sierra but the sun was out all day and it was gloriously warm. The wind started to pick up around 6 pm, but we were close to camp. We tucked our tents into a stand of trees to block the wind gusts, and enjoyed dinner in the waning daylight.<\/p>\n
