I had a monster backpack on my back, my big Salomon waterproof boots on my feet, and a multitude of Sierra fears in my brain.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_794\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-794\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/178.128.8.170\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/img_3020.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/178.128.8.170\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/img_3020.jpg\" title=\"\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-794\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-794\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">That may appear to be a smile, but it&#8217;s a borderline grimace of pain.<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nEventually, Katie, Connor, Roi, Matthew and I headed out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_795\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-795\" style=\"width: 391px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/178.128.8.170\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/img_3037.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"391\" height=\"300\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/178.128.8.170\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/img_3037.jpg\" title=\"\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-795\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-795\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">l-r: Roi, Matthew, Katie, Connor, and me.<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nThe temperature was high and my feet were roasting in the big boots, so I stopped every chance I got to rest and soak my feet in cold water. &nbsp;I became increasingly crabby with the weight and constant squeakiness of my Osprey pack&#8230;it felt as though a small man was bear hugging me and refusing to let go. &nbsp;But I knew that the real source of my irritability was my intolerance of change and of being out of my comfort zone, so I resolved to work on those things as I walked and hoped for the best.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/178.128.8.170\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/img_3042.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/178.128.8.170\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/img_3042.jpg\" title=\"\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-797\"><\/a><br \/>\nAt the end of the day, we camped with another hiker named High Risk in a neat little campground tucked away above the South fork of the Kern River and a bridge with swallows nests tucked underneath it. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/178.128.8.170\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/img_3066.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/178.128.8.170\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/img_3066.jpg\" title=\"\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-798\"><\/a><br \/>\nConnor and Katie went to take a swim in the river and I joined them for a bit, then I went to watch the birds zip in and out of their homes.
